When blood isn’t thicker than water.
Ping goes the phone
A message arrived
A photo taken from meters away
Of half open door and a
white carrier bag
Behind
Standing there
a frail old lady dressed in black
Wearing a look
I can’t ’quite surmise.
Are they saying hi or is it because they have been?
Or is it because the are saying good bye?
The girls she loves dearly and part of her flesh
She hasn’t seen for a while and not even
yesterday of all days
Her 80th
no candles to blow on the cake
and no cake to cut, no flowers or cards arrived
no one knocked
not one of the men
she calls her boys.
now in the bosom of someone else
that girlfriend and the other 2 wives
and All 3 with their very own lives.
staring at her
from the mantle piece
a lifetime of photos,
mostly framed, an empty spot for
those flowers that never arrived
to remind her she’s loved
No peep or sound
from all that surrounds
Alone In that dingy old house
A lifetime of noise in the walls
O where did it suddenly go?
And laugher of kids, is it done?
Or will it ever return?
Is this the start of the new norm?
when will it be when her soon to be
ex daughter in law, she blamed yesterday
will walk by with the girls just one more time?
